So, by now, pretty much everyone, their grandma, and their grandma’s favorite radio station knows about Far…

This is hardly a new trend in the music industry. Just like everything else in pop culture, music is cyclical and pretty easy to draw parallels with.

Congratulations hip hop, you’ve met your disco.

Rock met the same challenge in the 70’s. Bob Dylan, The Who and just about every other prolific rock star of the 60’s spent most of their time moping about disco and how it was killing music as we know it.  It was essentially the exact same situation.  Disco was designed as a series of catchy singles for play dance clubs, and there really weren’t any artists that attempted to challenge that.  Eventually people got wise to it and disco crashed and burned, pretty literally.

But at the same time, Don McLean’s “American Pie” is about how the Rolling Stones were awful and the only real music came from Buddy Holly’s generation.  Even the Beatles started with stuff like “I Wanna Hold Your Hand” and other fairly vacuous love songs.  So I guess there really are only two options. These new single focused artists need to grow up and get wise quick, or fall into the same trap that disco did and be remembered as a goofy side note in music history.
